EUAs (European Union Allowances – Emission rights)

EUAs are emission rights released by the government of the EU member states upon the request of companies affected by EU emission trading. An EUA entitles the holder to the emission of a metric ton of CO2 in a certain period of time within the bounds of European emission trading.

Determinants of EUA price development

The price of EUAs is defined by the ratio between the costs of carbon emission savings (supply) and the emission level (demand) in different sectors. The aim of emission trading is to conduct emission reductions where they are the most cost-efficient. Possible influences on price development include energy demand, economic growth and interest rate trends.
